Changing Pattern of Intestinal Helminth Infection in the Patients of Chonnam University Hospital

Abstract
This study was performed to evaluate and analyze changes of prevalence rate and pattern of intestinal helminth infection in the patients of Chonnam University Hospital from January 1991 to July 1992. We compared the results from 1991 to
1992(21,490
stool samples) with those from 1983 to 1984(18,350 stool samples), and those from 1988 to 1989(14,403 stool samples). The stool specimens were prepared by cellophane thick smear. The detection rat of intestinal helminths from January 1991 to July
1992
was significantly decreased to 10.1% in comparison with 14.1% in 1983-1984 and 14.2% in 1988-1989(p<0.001). the detection rates of major intestinal helmintns were 3.7%(1983-1984), 9.7%(1988-1989), and 8.6%(1991-1992) in C. sinensis/M. yokogawai;
5.8%,
2.95, and 1.05 in %. Trichiura; 3.6%, 0.6%, and 0.25 in A. lumbricoides; and 0.8%, 0.2%, and 0.1% in Taenia species, respectively. major intestinal helminths was C. sinensis/M. yokogawai, T. trichiura, A. lumbricoides, and Taenia species in
decreasing
order of frequency in the years of 1988-1989 and of 1991-1992. These prevalonce pattern was markedly different from that of 1983-1984. The detection rate of double infections of intestinal helminths was decreased from 0.57% in the years of
19898-1989 to
0.20%in the years of 1991-1992. These data show that in recent years, the prevalence rates of trematodes such as C. sinensis and M. yokogawai has increased, and those of soil-transmitted parasites of A. lumbricoides and T. trichiura has markedly
decreased.
